The purpose of our 6th Train the Trainers session organised physically was to visit and learn about Bioenergiedorf Breitenholz, a successful example of a sustainable heating community. The bioenergy village of Breitenholz, near Tübingen, operates with 100% renewable energy, using a combination of wood chips from regional sources (65%) and solar thermal energy (35%). The system includes 2,000 square meters of solar collectors and a one-million-liter thermal storage tank, which stores water heated to up to 80°C. The village’s heating network spans 4 kilometers, connecting over half of the 250 households..

The session offered a unique opportunity to explore the real-world challenges and successes of implementing energy communities. Participants delved into the barriers, enablers, and valuable lessons learned from the Breitenholz site, gaining insights into the practical aspects of transitioning to sustainable heating and cooling solutions.

We also had the chance to have an exclusive interview with Mr Günther Gamerdinger, Board member of Bürger-Energie Tübingen eG, who allowed us to dive deeper in this inspiring case. In this interview available below you will learn about this inspiring case and the specific challenges along the way.
